Backflow Prevention is Crucial to Prevent Water Contamination

What is Backflow Prevention?

At David LeRoy Plumbing, we strongly recommend our valued clients to look into backflow prevention for their home and business because we care so much about your safety and comfort. Without protection, unsafe, unhealthy water can contaminate your water supply putting the health of your family in jeopardy. Take a minute to learn how you can protect your home from the dangers of backflow today.

What is backflow, you ask? It occurs when the unwanted flow of water or a mixture of water and other liquids, gases and substances reverses into the distribution pipes of the potable water supply. It can potentially flow back from various plumbing devices, pools or irrigation systems. Serious health problems can occur and the contaminants that often invade your water supply can cause diseases, illnesses and even death. There are two different kinds of backflow that occur:

  1. Back Siphonage – Water pressure on the supply side drops or a negative pressure is created in the supply piping creating a vacuum. This causes the unwanted reversal of water. One of the most common causes of this type of backflow is a water main break.
  2. Backpressure – This occurs when the pressure in the downstream piping rises above the supply pressure of the system. When this happens, downstream substances are pushed into the potable water supply.

In attempt to monitor backflow control, legal standards have been made that require the use of backflow testers, mechanical backflow preventers, valves and devices due to the high risks that this contaminated water has on people’s health.  Protect the health of your family by ensuring that your water supply is not polluted with chemicals and other contaminants. Let our backflow experts find the perfect backflow preventer device  for you!
